tangier
Hotel Continental
The Continental was (and is) the dowager of Tangier hotels, the first established. Perched above the harbour, it’s here Equi meets Chief Inspector Inman at the novel’s beginning.
Here is a collection of images of Tangier to sample Equi’s city before WWII. The expanding Villa Nouvelle or European town was enclosing the old medina with a range of European styles including Art Deco and Beaux Arts. New streets had names like Pasteur, Rembrandt, Belgique and Magellan. Signs were in Spanish, French and Arabic –sometimes English.
I am grateful to Dr Philip Abensur, author of Tanger Entre Orient et Occident (2009) for kind permission to use images from his wonderful book.
